Who Makes Vanguard Water Heaters?
Vanguard is a discontinued Rheem Manufacturing Company label. Rheem built Vanguard-branded water heaters in the same factories as its Rheem, Ruud, and Richmond units, and inspection references explicitly group Vanguard with the Rheem serial format. Because of that shared production, Vanguard serial numbers use exactly the same date code as Rheem — the decoder above works identically for both brands.
Where to Find the Serial Number
Look for the rating plate (also called the data plate) — a silver or white sticker on the side of the tank, usually in the upper half on tank models. It shows the model number, serial number, capacity, and input rating. On older units the sticker may be grimy or faded; take a photo and increase the contrast, since even a partial serial is often enough.
How the Vanguard Serial Format Works
Ignore the letter prefix — Vanguard serials may start with RN, R, and similar factory prefixes, just like Rheem. The first four digits after the prefix are the date: two digits for the month, then two for the year.
Worked example — RN0197147899 (the example published by the Building Intelligence Center):

RN(ignore) 01= January (month)97= 1997 (year)- Result: manufactured January 1997
Some serials encode the week of the year instead of the month: the first two digits are the week (01–52), the next two are the year. If the rating plate prints a plain-text manufacture date, use that — it overrides the serial.
Why the Age of Your Water Heater Matters
- Lifespan. Tank-style water heaters typically last 8–12 years. Since the Vanguard label was discontinued years ago, every Vanguard unit still installed is past that window and living on borrowed time.
- Replacement planning. An old tank can rupture and release dozens of gallons of water. Knowing the exact age lets you replace on your schedule instead of after a failure.
- Buying or selling a home. Inspectors routinely report water heater age, and a decades-old Vanguard unit almost always becomes a negotiation point.
