Navien Water Heater Age — Serial Number Date Code & Age Chart

Navien

Enter the serial number from the data sticker on the side of your Navien tankless water heater, combi-boiler, or boiler (it is also printed on the unit's packaging). Works for NPE, NCB, NHB and other Navien series.

Find Your Navien Water Heater's Age

Navien condensing tankless water heaters, combi-boilers, and boilers all encode the exact production date inside the serial number — year, month, and often the day. Enter your serial number in the free decoder above, or read on to decode it by hand.

Where to Find the Serial Number

Look for the data sticker (rating label) on the side of the unit. It sits near the model number — NPE for tankless water heaters, NCB for combi-boilers, NHB for boilers — and lists the serial number alongside electrical and gas ratings. The same serial is also printed on the unit's original packaging. If the sticker is dirty, wipe it down and take a photo; even a partial serial often reveals the format.

How the Navien Serial Format Works

Standard format (most units). The first five characters are a factory prefix — ignore them. The next five characters are the date: two digits for the year, one character for the month, two digits for the day. Because the month is a single character, Navien uses X, Y, and Z for October, November, and December.

Worked example — 7414C14X1771143:

  • Prefix: 7414C (ignore)
  • 14 = 2014 (year)
  • X = October (month)
  • 17 = the day
  • Result: manufactured October 17, 2014

Another example — 9545J1152752044: prefix 9545J, then 11 = 2011, 5 = May, 27 = the day — May 27, 2011.

Hyphenated formats. Some serials use dashes. In the style 9262-20081208-1027, the middle group is a full eight-digit date: December 8, 2008. In the style 9010-2008-114-1014, the four digits after the first dash are the year only — 2008 — and the remaining groups don't reliably decode to a month.

Navien Age Chart: The Date Code at a Glance

Once you spot the date group in your serial, this chart is all you need:

In the serial Meaning
YY (two digits before the month) Year — e.g. 14 = 2014, 22 = 2022
19 (single digit after the year) Month — January through September
X October
Y November
Z December
DD (two digits after the month) Day of the month

Worked example — 7414C14X1771143: 14 + X + 17 = October 17, 2014. The factory prefix (first five characters) and the trailing production sequence are not part of the date.

Because the year is only two digits, the same code can point at two decades — a 14 date group is 2014 on most units, but could be 2004 on an older unit. If in doubt, compare the unit's model series and condition, or check the unit's install records; the decoder on this page lists every plausible year instead of guessing.

Why the Age of Your Navien Matters

  • Warranty. Navien heat exchanger warranties commonly run up to 15 years on residential models, with shorter terms on parts and labor — all counted from the manufacture date, not the install date. The serial number tells you whether a repair is still covered.
  • Recalls and service bulletins. Navien has issued recalls identified by the date group inside the serial (for example, units built between July and October 2018). Decoding yours takes seconds and tells you whether it falls in an affected range.
  • Maintenance planning. Tankless units need periodic descaling; knowing the exact age helps you judge whether an error code means a flush, a part, or a replacement.
