Rinnai has sold tankless water heaters in North America since 1999, and the manufacture date is encoded in the first few characters of every serial number — the format just changed once, in 2009. Where to Find the Serial Number
Check the rating data plate — a silver or white sticker on the side or front panel of the unit, sometimes behind a removable cover. The serial number is printed next to the model number. On older units the sticker can fade or get buried under dust and paint overspray; a phone photo with the contrast turned up usually makes it readable again.
How the Rinnai Serial Format Works
Units made since 2009 use a two-letter date code at the very start of the serial: the first letter is the year, the second letter is the month.
Worked example — BL.CA-051306:
B= 2010 (year letter — A = 2009, B = 2010, C = 2011, and so on, skipping I, Q, U and V)L= November (month letter — A = January through M = December, skipping I)CAand the remaining digits = factory and production sequence- Result: manufactured in November 2010
The year letters run A = 2009 through the current cycle: J = 2017, M = 2020, R = 2023, T = 2025, W = 2026. (O and P both mean 2022 — O was used on a single model only.)
Units made from 1999 to 2008 use four leading digits instead: year, then month. The digits may be split by a period and dash (04.03-102521 = March 2004) or run together (050706654 = July 2005) — both decode the same way.

Why the Age of Your Tankless Water Heater Matters
- Lifespan. Rinnai tankless units typically last 15–20 years — about double a tank-style heater — but only with upkeep. Knowing the age tells you how much run is realistically left.
- Warranty. Rinnai heat-exchanger warranties commonly run 10–15 years depending on the model and registration, counted from the manufacture or install date. Decoding the serial tells you whether a repair might still be covered.
- Maintenance timing. Descaling the heat exchanger matters more every year in hard-water areas. An accurate age helps you judge whether a flush, a repair, or a replacement is the sensible spend.
- Buying a home. A tankless unit already past 15 years is a near-term replacement cost worth knowing about before closing.
