Tankless vs Tank Water Heater

Lifespan and Failure
A conventional tank dies when corrosion eats through the steel tank — often with little warning and a flooded floor. That is why tank units average 8–12 years and why the anode rod (the cheap sacrificial part) matters so much.
A tankless unit has no tank to rust through, and its heat exchanger and burner can be replaced as parts — which is why tankless units routinely reach 15–20 years. The catch is scale: in hard-water areas, a never-descaled tankless unit can fail in half that time with a locked-up heat exchanger.
Energy and Running Cost
Tankless units heat water only when you use it, so they skip the standby losses of a tank that keeps 40–60 gallons hot around the clock. In practice, expect modest but real savings — not enough by itself to justify the higher upfront price in a low-use home, but attractive in a high-use household or combined with a tank near the end of its life. Heat pump (hybrid) tanks are the other efficiency play, and they keep the simpler tank form factor.
Sizing Matters More for Tankless
A tank gives you a buffer: even an undersized one delivers a full tank of hot water before slowing down. A tankless unit has no buffer — its flow rate (GPM) and the incoming water temperature decide everything. In cold climates, a small unit that is perfect for one bathroom can struggle with two showers running at once. Which Should You Buy?
- Choose tank if: your budget is the priority, your hot-water use is modest, you have space in the utility room, or you want the simplest service life. A 6- or 12-year-warranty tank from Rheem, A.O. Smith, or Bradford White remains the default choice for most US homes.
- Choose tankless if: you want continuous hot water, floor space matters (condo, closet install), you are in a high-use household, or you plan to stay in the home long enough for the efficiency savings to offset the higher upfront cost.
