TankBirthday is a free reference tool for looking up the age of a water heater from its serial number. We collect very little data, and this page explains exactly what that is.
Serial numbers stay in your browser
When you type a serial number into one of our decoder tools, the decoding happens entirely in your web browser using JavaScript that runs on your device. The serial number is not sent to our server, not transmitted over the internet, and not stored anywhere — ours or anyone else's. Once you leave or refresh the page, it is gone. You can verify this yourself in your browser's developer tools: decoding works even with the network tab offline.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how the site is used — which pages are visited, how long people stay, and which decoders get used. Google Analytics collects:
- Pages you visit and how you arrived at the site
- Approximate location (derived from your IP address, at city or region level)
- Device and browser information (e.g. mobile or desktop, screen size)
This data is collected using cookies and is aggregated — we use it to see trends, not to identify individual visitors. We do not combine it with any other information about you, and we do not sell or share it with anyone other than Google as the analytics provider.

Opting out: you can stop Google Analytics from collecting your data on any site by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, or by blocking cookies and third-party scripts in your browser settings.
No accounts, no ads
The site has no accounts, no sign-ups, and no contact forms, so we never ask for your name, email address, or any other personal information. We do not currently serve advertising or use advertising trackers.
