Read a Worn Data Plate Without Squinting
The serial number on your water heater's rating plate is the key to its age — but after a decade in a basement, that sticker can be faded, dusty, or half-painted-over. Typing characters you can barely read is how mistakes happen: a 0 that's actually an O changes the date.
This tool reads the plate from a photo instead:
- Take a photo of the rating plate — the silver sticker on the side of the tank (or the side panel on tankless units). Flat and close beats far and angled.

- Check the candidates. The tool shows every serial-like code it found and runs each one through every brand format on the site, so a misread character is flagged instead of silently producing a wrong date.
Why This Matters for an Old Tank
A water heater past its typical 8–12 year lifespan is a leak waiting to happen. The date on that faded sticker decides whether you budget for a replacement this year or next — and whether a repair is still covered by a warranty that runs from the manufacture date, not the install date. If the sticker is unreadable by eye, the photo lookup above is the fastest honest answer you can get without a plumber's visit.
The Honest Limits
OCR on a worn, glossy sticker is not perfect — the tool says so plainly. It shows you exactly what it read, checks every candidate against real decoder logic, and never guesses. If it can't find a recognizable serial, it tells you to try a better photo or enter the characters manually on the brand page. That "we don't know rather than guess" stance is the same one every decoder on this site follows.
